11/10/2014

Roof replacement & Skylight installation competed by ES roof

This customers had their roof replaced by ES roof and they went with the Certainteed Landmark Moire Black Architectural Lifetime Shingles. They also had us install two Velux venting skylights for better ventilation and more natural lighting.

Skylight Benefits

Some of the benefits of skylights extend beyond our environment and personal well-being. The increase in natural light that skylights provide have a variety of physical and psychological benefits. Skylights can help not only bring new life and energy to a room, but also improve our health and happiness.

Why Install Skylights?

  • Less energy consumption- Reduce up to 10% on electricity with lessened dependency on artificial lighting.
  • Reduce buildup of mold and mildew- Sunlight is considered one of the best natural disinfectants. A lot of diseases like chronic respiratory problems, are often associated with bacterial and fungal buildup in damp areas like bathrooms, kitchens and basements. Natural lighting naturally decreases the production of harmful organisms.
  • Better air quality- Poor air quality also causes a variety of health issues that can be prevented with venting skylights. By adding a venting skylight air will naturally recycle through your home.
  • Good dose of vitamin D- Plenty amounts of sunlight can prevent vitamin D and B1 deficiencies specially during the winter when most people stay inside because of the cold weather.
  • Better performance in the working environment- Many studies have been conducted that show significant improvements in employee performance in a work environment where natural light has been introduced.

Health Benefits

  • Sunlight can help to lower blood pressure, reduce stress and a variety of other health benefits.
  • Natural sunlight is a great mood enhancer that helps us produce vitamin D and protects us from seasonal mood changes.
  • Poor lighting can cause eye fatigue and headaches, which can make us feel depressed or ill.
  • Lack of natural lighting can trigger depression and cause a negative effect on our immune system.
  • Bright lighting stimulates the mind while dim lighting quiets our senses and can make us feel drowsy.
  • Natural lighting helps faster recovery from an illness or operation.

Skylight Positioning

You might be wondering which location of the house would benefit you when installing a skylight?
  • If installed on the north-facing roof the skylight will provide fairly constant illumination.
  • One on an east-facing roof will provide maximum lighting and heat gain in the morning.
  • A west-facing skylight provides afternoon sunlight gain, but can also produce unwanted heat later in the day.
  • The south-facing skylight increases solar heat gain in the winter. Unfortunately, it also produces the most heat gain in the summer, unless you have deciduous trees that give the roof a shade in the summer and lose their leaves in the winter.
